In 1996, members of Subud in New York bought the former Fur Center Synagogue at 230 West 29th Street in Manhattan and renovated the premises to suit the needs of our group. From the outset, knowing there would be times we weren't meeting here as a group, we set about defraying our ownership expenses by sharing our Subud house with groups whose aims and purposes are congenial with our own. Understanding that some organizations may have regular or occasional need to host gatherings in larger spaces they couldn't support on a full-time basis, we happily serve the nonprofit community by offering exempt organizations below-market rental rates. Groups with spiritual aims and goals that mirror our own are especially favored. Today we have a small community of tenants within the larger community of the city. We invite you to call or visit to discover how you might join us.

About the Subud Chelsea Center
A Brief Description of Subud
Subud is an international spiritual association of men and women who seek a direct experience of the grace of God through an individual or personalized exercise known as "latihan." Some people join Subud from a desire to worship, some in the hope of achieving an elevated state of consciousness. Others simply want to quiet their minds or better manage the emotions and feelings that beset them. Virtually any motive for joining is acceptable and there is no financial cost, either to apply for membership or to join. Neither is there any dogma to which you must adhere. Financial contributions to support the larger worldwide Subud organization or for the upkeep of our center are welcome, though not obligatory. The latihan of Subud is uniquely experiential and can't be understood with the ordinary thinking mind. Nevertheless, internet search engines turn up dozens of Subud websites, some of which may be useful to those who are seriously interested in inner-directed worship and self-development. Subud New York, which has its own website, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in good standing with the federal government. Our latihans are currently held at the center on Monday and Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. A latihan open to women only takes place early Wednesday afternoon. If you want to know more about Subud and the New York group please visit the Subud New York website (subudnewyork.org) or call (212) 563-1196 where you can arrange to meet with senior Subud members known as helpers.
