Neighborhood Restaurants

(212) 563-1216

There are 55,000 restaurants in New York City and, supposedly, 7,000 of them close each month. We read it somewhere, so it may well be so. More reliably we can say that there are a hundred places to obtain food within a ten minute walk of here. We've written a line or two about some of the more useful and noteworthy. Cast your vote for one of ours or persuade us to list your fave. (Yes, we do keep a folder of menus around here).

American

The Loving Hut

Your rating: None (1 vote)

Number of blocks away: 1.5

Description: A recent addition to the neighborhood, the Loving Hut provides Vegan Cuisine wih a multiculutral flourish. Vegetable juices are absent and the menu is simple and pared down, but the prices are very reasonable. Offerings include six salads for under $7.50. Entrees include among other comestibles Japanese Udon (noodles) vegan fried rice, Thai Curry, and a mushroom as well as a spinach Quesadilla. The place is tiny so plan to eat elsewhere. If you bring it back here, please remember food and drink are confined to downstairs.

Charleston's Bistro

Your rating: None (4 votes)

Number of blocks away: 1.5

Description: Located on the east side of 7th Ave, Charleston's turns out breakfast and lunch. You can customize your sandwich or wrap choose from at least a dozen kinds of soups. They do smoothies, serve entrees, and salads. Some will  prefer the food and prices at the more hectic, economical and less atmospheric Bagel Maven. Charleston's has an upstairs eating area that's often empty. They cater and deliver.

Swagat Indian Restaurant

Number of blocks away: One

Description: If spice is the variety of your life you may want to visit Swagat where ample helpings and steam table servings are quick, easy  inexpensive -- and pungent. Korma, paneers, curries, tandoori, vegetarian and varieties of Indian bread. The atmosphere isn't anything to write home about, but you can always do take-out. They deliver and cater.

Triple Crown

Your rating: None (1 vote)

Number of blocks away: 1

Description: Good and hearty pub food at reasonable prices, full bar, sports on big tvs. Usually pretty quiet for lunch, this place gets busy before and after Madison Square Garden Events. Best place in town to watch that internatiional soccer game. Deliveries available.

brgr

Chinese

Ginger House

Your rating: None (2 votes)

Number of blocks away: 1

  • Address: 330 7th Ave (between 29th & 28th)
  • Phone: (212) 760-2661 or Fax (212) 760-0830

Description: The largest restaurant in the neighborhood is Chinese. The menu is big with a lot of vegetarian offerings and you can design your own dishes. The  place is big noisy and the service generally prompt. Their menu promotes a mezzanine area available for private parties. If you want to eat as a large group I suggest calling them in advance. They deliver and they're open until 11 pm.

Thai
