There is no shortage of hotels in the neighborhood. In fact, the nearest is about two hundred feet from our door. If proximity isn't your highest priority, though, you might start with an internet search, follow up with a phone call to get answers to speciific question, then go back online to actually book the room. Recent experience suggests that you can almost always get a better price if you book online with Expedia, Orbitz or another portal. If you're flying in the best deal of all might be in combination with your plane ticket. Below are a few places you might want to look into.
Very close by
Double Tree Chelsea
Number of blocks away: 1 long block
Description: One of as many as a dozen small hotels built in our neighborhood recently by Chelsea's answer to Donald Trump, Sam Chang. This one has a small bar. The Double Tree is owned by Hilton, which also has another twin-like hotel right around the block on 28th Street, the Hilton Garden Inn.
Holiday Inn Express
Number of blocks away: 250 feet
Description: If proximity is of the essence it would hard to be closer to the Subud Chelsea Center than you would be at the Holiday Inn Express.
Five to Ten Blocks Away
Hotel Giraffe
Number of blocks away: 5-10
Description: A friend who comes to town on business wouldn't dream of staying anywhere than at the Giraffe. It's a little further, as well as higher end and somewhat pricier than our other listings, but well worth checking out. Everything's very clean, well designed and laid back. There's piano jazz in the lobby of an evening and the staff delivers cordial service.
Hotel Pennsylvania
Number of blocks away: four or five
Description: This is a big established hotel right across from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. It bills itself as the fourth largest, sports 1,700 rooms, says it's kid and pet friendly. Macy's is a block away.
Youth Hostels
Chelsea Center Hostel
Number of blocks away: Two
Description: Sometimes our phone rings and it's not really for us. Hasty editors of hostel books and internet portals are responsible for this confusion. You can't stay overnight at the Subud Chelsea Center, but you can stay overnight at the Chelsea Center Hostel, which is, essentially two floors of a New York Brownstone row house. Kitchen facilities and common room.
